When to Call 911
Instead of a Dentist

Most dental emergencies are best treated in a dental office, not an emergency room. However, some situations are life-threatening and require immediate medical attention. Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room if you experience any of the following:

If you are not sure whether your situation is life-threatening, call 911 first. For all other dental emergencies, call our office right away. We can guide you on what to do while you are on your way.

Relief When You Need It Most

Common Dental Emergencies and What to Do Before You Reach Our Office

If your situation is not life-threatening but you are in pain, losing a tooth, or dealing with damage that cannot wait, you are in the right place. Below are the most common dental emergencies we see, along with what you should do right now before you reach our office.
Common Dental Emergencies and What to Do Before You Reach Our Office

Severe Toothache or Throbbing Pain

Rinse gently with warm salt water. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen works best for dental pain). Do not place aspirin directly on the gum. Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse gently with milk or water for no more than 10 seconds. Try to place it back in the socket and hold it in position by biting down on a clean cloth. If you cannot reinsert it, keep the tooth moist in a cup of milk or between your cheek and gum. Get to our office within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with gauze. Save any tooth fragments if possible. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your tongue and cheek. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a crown came off, try to slip it back over the tooth using a small amount of denture adhesive or toothpaste to hold it temporarily. Do not use household glue. Avoid chewing on that side. If a filling fell out, place a piece of sugarless gum over the opening to protect it. Call us promptly because the exposed tooth is vulnerable to further damage and infection.

Broken or Loose Braces Wire

Use the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire into a more comfortable position. Cover the sharp end with orthodontic wax, a small cotton ball, or a piece of sugarless gum. Do not cut the wire yourself unless absolutely necessary, as you may accidentally swallow or inhale a small piece.

Tooth Pushed Out of Position (Partially Dislodged)

Do not try to force the tooth back into its original position. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to manage swelling and pain. Bite down gently on a clean cloth to stabilize the tooth. Contact us immediately because early treatment improves the chance of saving the tooth.

The Treatment Process

What to Expect When You Arrive

Walking into a dental office during an emergency can feel stressful, especially when you do not know what comes next. Here is what happens when you get to Berkshire Smile Studio so there are no surprises.
1

Immediate Assessment and Pain Relief

When you arrive, our team prioritizes your comfort and safety first. We will assess your pain level, take a focused look at the affected area, and begin managing your pain right away. If you are in severe discomfort, relief comes before anything else.

2

Fast, Accurate Diagnosis and Same-Day Treatment

We use CBCT imaging (a 3D scan of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures) to see exactly what is happening beneath the surface. Once we have a clear diagnosis, we begin treatment immediately. With our CEREC technology, many emergencies, including broken teeth and lost crowns, can be fully repaired in a single visit.
3

Clear Next Steps Before You Go

Before you leave, we will explain exactly what was done, what to expect during recovery, and whether any follow-up care is needed. You will leave with written aftercare instructions and a clear understanding of your treatment plan going forward.

No Surprises, Just Fast and Focused Care

Choose Excellence

Why Our Practice Stands Above Traditional Dental Care

We combine over 45 years of trusted service with cutting-edge dental technology to deliver care that prioritizes your comfort and health. You’ll experience the difference personalized attention makes from the moment you walk through our doors.
Same-Day Restorations with Advanced Technology

Our office is equipped with CEREC technology (PrimeScan, PrimeMill, and CEREC Speedfire), which allows us to design, create, and place permanent crowns, bridges, and restorations in a single visit. For emergencies involving broken or damaged teeth, this means you leave with a completed repair rather than a temporary solution and another appointment.

We use CBCT imaging to capture detailed 3D views of your teeth, roots, jawbone, and surrounding tissue. This is especially important in emergencies where fractures, infections, or hidden damage may not be visible on a standard x-ray. Better imaging means faster, more accurate treatment decisions.

Dr. Shakil Syed, a Columbia University trained dentist and member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, brings over 12 years of experience to every emergency case. Whether you need an extraction, a root canal (treatment to save an infected tooth), or a same-day crown, you are in experienced hands.

We know that dental emergencies are stressful. Pain, fear, and uncertainty can make the experience overwhelming. Our team takes time to explain what is happening, answer your questions, and make sure you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Emergency Dentistry FAQs

We know you have questions about dental implants, and we’re here to help. Below are answers to some of the most common concerns we hear from patients. If you have additional questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Any situation involving severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, a knocked-out or broken tooth, signs of infection (swelling, fever, pus), or trauma to the mouth qualifies as a dental emergency. If you are unsure, call us and we will help you determine the right course of action.
Call us as soon as possible. We will do our best to see you the same day. Calling ahead allows our team to prepare for your arrival and provide guidance on what to do while you are on your way.
If you experience a dental emergency outside of our regular hours, call our office number for guidance. If your situation is life-threatening (difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected broken jaw), go directly to the emergency room or call 911.
The cost depends on the type and severity of your emergency. We will discuss costs with you before beginning treatment so there are no surprises. We also offer flexible financing options to make emergency care accessible.
It depends on the situation. Many emergencies can be fully resolved in one visit, especially with our same-day restoration technology. In some cases, follow-up care may be recommended to ensure proper healing or complete a multi-step treatment.
You can, but emergency rooms typically manage pain and infection with medication rather than treating the underlying dental problem. A dental office is better equipped to diagnose and fix the actual issue. We recommend calling us first for faster, more effective care.
Do not try to reinsert a baby tooth, as doing so can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. However, if there is significant bleeding, pain, or damage to the gum or surrounding teeth, call us for an evaluation.
Yes. Dental infections can escalate quickly, even if pain is manageable at first. Swelling, a persistent bad taste, low-grade fever, or a visible bump on the gum are all signs that treatment should not wait.
Yes. Over-the-counter ibuprofen is generally the most effective option for dental pain. Take it as directed on the label before your visit. Avoid aspirin if there is active bleeding, as it can make bleeding harder to control.
Bring your ID, insurance card if you have one, and a list of any medications you currently take. If a tooth was knocked out or a piece of a tooth broke off, bring it with you in a cup of milk or wrapped in a damp cloth.
