Not long ago, getting a dental crown meant two separate appointments, a temporary crown in between, and at least two weeks of waiting for a lab to fabricate your permanent restoration. Today, we can design, mill, and place a custom crown in a single visit. That shift didn’t happen by accident. It came from technology that completely changed what’s possible inside a dental office.
What Is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. In practical terms, it’s a system that lets us scan your tooth digitally, design your restoration on a computer, and mill it from a ceramic block, all while you’re still in the chair. At Berkshire Smile Studio, we use the full CEREC system: PrimeScan for digital impressions, PrimeMill for in-office milling, and CEREC Speedfire for ceramic firing. Each component plays a role in getting you a precise, durable, natural-looking crown without the wait.
How the Process Works
Here’s what a same-day crown appointment looks like from start to finish:
- Digital scan: We use PrimeScan to capture a precise 3D image of your tooth and surrounding teeth. No messy impressions, no trays.
- Custom design: Using the scan, we design your crown on-screen to match your bite and blend naturally with neighboring teeth.
- In-office milling: PrimeMill fabricates your crown from a high-quality ceramic block in the office.
- Firing and finishing: CEREC Speedfire refines the ceramic for strength and aesthetics.
- Placement: We fit and bond your permanent crown, and you leave with a finished restoration the same day.
Why This Matters for You
Beyond the obvious convenience of fewer appointments, same-day crowns eliminate the need for a temporary crown. Temporaries can be sensitive, uncomfortable, and occasionally dislodge at inconvenient moments. With CEREC, you go from a damaged or decayed tooth to a permanent, polished restoration in one visit.
The fit is also exceptionally precise. Because the crown is designed from a digital scan of your actual tooth rather than a physical mold sent to an off-site lab, there’s less room for error in the process. The result is a restoration that feels natural and functions exactly as it should.
Is a Same-Day Crown Right for You?
CEREC crowns work well for most patients who need a crown due to decay, a cracked tooth, or an old filling that’s failing. During your consultation, we’ll assess your situation and confirm whether same-day treatment is the right fit. For the vast majority of our patients in Pittsfield and across the Berkshire region, it is.
